The Logainm of Togher

Togher is a special place in County Cork, Ireland. The name 'Togher' comes from the Irish word 'tóchar' which means 'causeway'. A causeway is a raised road or path, usually across wet ground or water. Many years ago, people in Ireland built these causeways so they could walk across boggy or marshy land without getting their feet wet. So, the name Togher tells us that there was probably a causeway in this area a long time ago.

Some say that Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once used the causeways in Togher. While we can't be sure if that's true, it makes the history of Togher even more interesting. Today, Togher is a bustling suburb in the city of Cork and home to many families, schools, and businesses. Even though we don't use causeways much now, the name Togher reminds us of how people in ancient times found clever ways to travel around Ireland.
