Welcome to Stillorgan

Stillorgan, a lovely townland in Ireland, has a lot of interesting history to share. A long, long time ago, well before your grandparents were born, people lived here during a time called the Stone Age. That's over 5,000 years ago! They even built a big stone monument called a dolmen, which you can still see today.

In the 18th Century, which is about 300 years ago, Stillorgan was known for its fancy big houses and beautiful gardens. The most famous house was Stillorgan Park House, but sadly, it's not there anymore.

One fun fact about Stillorgan is about its bowling green. Have you ever seen people playing a game where they roll balls on grass to hit a smaller ball? That's called lawn bowling! The people in Stillorgan had one of the first places to play this game in Ireland.

In more recent times, Stillorgan became famous for its shopping centre. Opened in 1966, it was the first of its kind in Ireland. People from all over came to shop there, just like when we go to the mall!

So, as you can see, Stillorgan may be a small place, but it has a big, rich history!

My Family and Stillorgan

Hi, I'm Zephyr and I'm 8 years old. I live in a cool place called Stillorgan in Ireland. It's really fun here. We have the biggest shopping centre around and it's my favourite place. My friends and I like to go there and watch people shopping. We try to guess what they're buying. It's like a game for us. And also, there's a great library that I love. It's full of books and I like to read about dragons and princesses there.

Then there's the Bowling Alley. I've had a couple of birthday parties there. It's really fun to knock down the pins and cheer with my friends. I also love the park. It's full of trees and there's a big playground where I can swing as high as the sky. It's also a great place for picnics with my family. We sit under a tree and eat sandwiches. Yumm!

But the most amazing thing in Stillorgan is the Obelisk. It's really tall and very old. My teacher told me that it was built a long time ago. I imagine it was built by giants. It's really cool to think about.

  1. How old am I?
  2. In which country do I live?
  3. What game do I play with my friends at the shopping centre?
  4. What do I love to read about in the library?

The Logainm of Stillorgan

Stillorgan is a place in Ireland. The name 'Stillorgan' comes from the Irish words 'Stigh Lorcáin', which means 'house of Lorcan'. Lorcan was a monk who lived many, many years ago. People say that he built his house near a pool of clear water. That's why the place got its name!

Long ago, people did not have maps or street signs like we do today. They named places after what they saw or who lived there. In the case of Stillorgan, it was named after Lorcan's house. Over time, the pronunciation and spelling changed a bit, and 'Stigh Lorcáin' became 'Stillorgan'.

Today, Stillorgan is a busy place with lots of houses, shops, and even a big shopping centre! So, when you hear the name 'Stillorgan', remember the monk Lorcan and his house near the clear water pool. It's a link to the past that's still alive in the present day!
