Welcome to Glasheen

Glasheen is a charming little townland in Ireland. Its name comes from the Irish phrase "Glaisín", which means "small stream". Isn't it fun to know that names can tell us a lot about a place's history?

Long, long ago, people in Glasheen lived a very different life than we do today. They had simple houses, and many of them farmed the land, growing crops and raising animals. It was a quiet, peaceful place.

Although no famous battles or events happened in Glasheen, it has its own special story to tell. Imagine all the children who went to school there, just like you, learning and playing, making friends and memories. Think about all the birthdays, weddings, and holidays celebrated in Glasheen over the years.

Even if it's not famous for a big event, Glasheen's history is woven together from all these small, everyday moments. Each person who lived there added their own thread to the story, creating a rich tapestry that tells us about the past. Isn't it exciting to think that every place has a history, even if it seems ordinary at first glance?

My Family and Glasheen

Hi there! I'm Casey, and I'm 8 years old. I love living in Glasheen because it's full of awesome stuff. My favorite place to go is Fitzgerald's Park. It's super fun! I like to feed the ducks and play on the playground. Sometimes, we have picnics there too.

There's also the Cork Public Museum right inside the park. It's cool because it has old stuff like swords and coins. I like to imagine I'm a pirate or a knight when I see those.

Another neat place near my home is the University College Cork. I don't go to college yet, but my mom says maybe someday I will. I like to see the big, old buildings and the students rushing around. It's pretty cool.

I also like to go to the local bakery, it's called The Natural Foods Bakery. They have the best chocolate chip cookies in the whole world. My mom says it's because they use real ingredients, whatever that means. All I know is they're yummy!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, Glasheen is a pretty great place to be an 8-year-old. I get to see cool things, eat yummy food, and play in the best park ever. Plus, I get to share it all with you!

The Logainm of Glasheen

Glasheen is a special Irish word called a logainm, which is a name for a place. In English, Glasheen means "little stream". Imagine a tiny river babbling along, with little fish swimming in it and birds singing nearby. That's what people long ago thought of when they named places Glasheen.

Many years ago, people in Ireland used the Irish language to name places around them. The name they chose often described what the place looked like or something special about it. So, places named Glasheen probably had a small stream running through them. Even today, you can find places in Ireland with this name. And guess what? Some of them still have little streams!
