My Family and Dromleigh South

Hi, I'm Val! I'm 8 years old and I live in this cool place called Dromleigh South in Co. Cork. My house is surrounded by lots of green fields that stretch out as far as your eyes can see. Sometimes, I spot rabbits and foxes playing in them.

There's a big old windmill not too far from my house. It's really old and not working anymore but it's a fun place to play hide and seek. My friends and I often pretend it's a castle and we're brave knights protecting it from dragons.

I also love visiting the river nearby. There's a bridge that goes over it and from there, you can see fishes swimming. Sometimes, I like to take my sketchbook and draw everything I see there.

When I grow up, I want to be an artist. I love drawing the animals, the windmill, the river and the beautiful landscapes around my house. My life is pretty fun here in Dromleigh South, Co. Cork and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

The Logainm of Dromleigh South

Dromleigh South is a special place in County Cork, Ireland. Its name in the Irish language is Drom Liath Theas. When we translate it into English, it means 'The South Grey Ridge'. A ridge is a long, high piece of land, like the top of a hill, and 'grey' might be because of the rocks or the colour of the landscape.

A long time ago, people used to speak Irish all the time and they named places in Irish too. So, the name tells us a little about the place and its history. The 'South' part of the name tells us it's the southern part of a bigger area called Dromleigh.

Nowadays, even though we usually speak English, we still use the old Irish names for lots of places. So, even though you might live in Dromleigh South, you're also living in Drom Liath Theas! Isn't that cool?
