My Family and Dooradoyle

Hi there! I'm Van, and I just turned 8. I live in a really cool place called Dooradoyle. It's in Ireland, and I love it here! My house is near the Crescent Shopping Centre. It's the biggest shopping centre in the country! My mum and I often go there on weekends. There are so many shops and I get to eat my favourite ice cream.

We also live near the Dooradoyle Park. It's the best place to play soccer and have picnics. I often go there with my friends after school. We love playing on the swings and the slide. There's also a big tree that's really good for climbing. I climbed it once, but I got scared and my dad had to help me down.

The best thing about Dooradoyle is the people. They are so friendly and nice. My neighbour, Mrs. O'Sullivan, always gives me cookies when I visit her. She makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world! I love growing up here and can't wait to see more of Dooradoyle as I get bigger!

The Logainm of Dooradoyle

Dooradoyle is a special name that comes from Ireland. In Irish, it's called 'Droichead an Doire O gCill'. This might sound like a mouthful, but when we break it down, it's not so tough. 'Droichead' means bridge, 'Doire' means oak, and 'O gCill' means from the church. So, Dooradoyle translates to 'Bridge of the oak from the church' in English. Isn't that interesting?

Long, long ago, there was probably a bridge made from an oak tree near a church in this area. That's how Dooradoyle got its name! Fast forward to today, Dooradoyle is a bustling suburban area in Limerick city. Even though we might not see an oak bridge or the church, the name Dooradoyle always reminds us of its interesting past. So, next time when you hear Dooradoyle, you can imagine a beautiful old bridge made of oak wood near a church!
