While Ireland is a natural place for growing blackberries, until 2022, there wasn't a festival celebrating them. However, the island of Inis Meáin changed that with Féile na bPuiteachaí. As there's no word of a repeat of the festival, there is a place in the world where a regular festival exists, and it is called the Blackberry Festival in Lenoir, North Carolina, USA.
The Blackberry Festival is an annual event that celebrates the ripe, juicy, sweet blackberry fruit. The festival happens in the summer, usually in July, when blackberries are in season. This celebration is filled with lots of fun activities for children and adults alike.
One of the most exciting activities for children at the Blackberry Festival is the "Blackberry Eating Contest". In this contest, children are given a bowl full of delicious blackberries. The goal is to eat all the blackberries in the bowl as fast as they can. Imagine having a bowl of sweet, juicy blackberries all to yourself and being cheered on as you enjoy them!
There are also games, crafts, and music performances that children can enjoy at the festival. Some children even get to participate in the "Blackberry Princess" pageant. Kids can also learn about how blackberries grow and the important role they play in our environment.
So, even though we don't seems to have a Blackberry Festival in Ireland anymore, you can imagine what it would be like if we did. Maybe you can celebrate blackberries at home by picking them when they are ripe, baking a blackberry pie, or simply enjoying them in your favourite dessert. Remember, blackberries are not just tasty, they are also packed with vitamins and good for your health!
